HGST, formerly known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, has unveiled the first 6TB hard drive, claiming it as the worlds highest capacity disk with low operating costs for data centre applications such as cloud storage and massive scale-out environments.
Available now, the 6TB Ultrastar He6 drives are helium filled units based on HGSTs HelioSeal technology. They partly owe their large capacity to the fact that the firm has managed to cram seven disk platters rather than five into the standard 1in high form factor for 3.5in drives, HGST said.
Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing at HGST, said that the company has worked closely with customers and partners including HP, Netflix, Huawei Unified Storage and CERN to qualify the drive for cloud computing and other data centre applications.
"Not only is our new Ultrastar helium hard drive helping customers solve data centre challenges today, our mainstream helium platform will serve as the future building block for new products and technologies moving forward," he said.
