Amazon to trial cloud computing services from Chinese data centres in 2014

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is to begin a preview of a China Region for its cloud computing platform early next year. The move will be important for businesses using AWS who may be looking to expand into the growing Chinese marketplace.

Announcing the limited preview coming in early 2014, Amazon said it is partnering with local Chinese providers, including ChinaNetCenter and Sinnet. These companies will provide the necessary data centre hosting and internet connectivity for the Chinese AWS platform.

While this is Amazons fourth AWS Region in Asia Pacific and the tenth region globally, the move means customers inside China and international companies looking to target the Chinese market will be able to host some services locally.

With the launch of the new AWS China Region, these customers will be able to run their applications on infrastructure hosted in mainland China. This significantly reduces latency to local end users and enables companies with requirements to store their data in China to easily do so, Amazon said.

Andrew Jassy, Amazon Web Services senior vice president, said customers had been pressing for a local AWS Region in China.

BBM coming to Nokia Lumia Update And Nokia X

Nokia has taken to the stage at the MWC 2014 and the announcements are coming in thick and fast. One of the first announcements is some new apps for the Lumia platform, including BBM for Lumia.



BBM or BlackBerry Messenger has traditionally been limited to BlackBerry devices until it was made available on iOS and Android last year. Now BBM will also be available on Lumia devices, bringing it to an even wider audience. The app will be available ‘in the coming months’.

Update: BBM will also be available on the new Nokia X series phones, but that is not that big a deal since BlackBerry already has an Android app.

Whatsapp Makes Fun At BlackBerry

Whatsapp released and update to their Whatsapp Messenger for Android platform yesterday, stressing on the good things you get to gain from using Whatsapp Messenger. One of the good things according to Whatsapp is that you dont need to remember PIN or contact name. This is some sort of taking a spin on BlackBerry Messenger aka (BBM).

You would recall that BlackBerry was supposed to release BBM for Android and iPhone last week (21st of September) but failed. I for one, am getting really impatient and the same goes for a lot of folks. Some have already lost interest in the BBM app for Android and iPhone.

Sequel to this failed BBM release for Android and iPhone, Whatsapp have beefed up their app, making it more fluid and user friendly with successive updates across all platforms.

Of course, Whatsapp is aware of the huge craving consumers have for BlackBerry Messenger and Whatsapp is doing everything in their power to make sure that its customers stay with them while gaining new customers.

Check ins and rating places get easier with Google Maps 5 5 for Android

We’ve made it easier to check in and out of places, rate various locations, and get transit information with Google Maps 5.5 for Android. This release adds ‘check in’ and ‘rate and review’ buttons to Place pages, the option to edit your home/work address for Latitude, and redesigned transit station pages.

Read below for more details about the new features, which we hope will improve your user experience, a topic we take very seriously as there are now more than 200 million users of Google Maps for mobile across platforms and devices worldwide.

New check-in and rating buttons added to Place pages

Now when you open a Place page from your mobile device, you can check in to places with Google Latitude or submit a rating or review by clicking on two new buttons at the top of the listing.

This past week I had the chance to explore the Computer History Museum during my visit to San Francisco from across the pond in London. Once nearby, I could quickly open the museum’s Place page and check in.

When I was ready to leave and head to lunch, in a few seconds I could go back to the Place page and rate the museum – which certainly earned the 5 star rating it received from me.

Update home and work address for your Latitude Location History

Last month we released the Location History dashboard for Latitude which estimates how much time you spend at home, work, and everywhere else. If your home or work address changes, or you’d rather set a different address to represent ‘home’ and ‘work,’ you can now edit these addresses within Latitude.

View the redesigned transit station pages

It’s been about two years since we added transit directions in Google Maps for Android. Since then, we’ve increased the coverage from 250 cities to more than 440 and counting - the most recent being Washington, D.C. To make it easier to plan your transit route, we updated the transit station pages in this release to better organize the information you need.

Each page now includes a list of upcoming scheduled departures for different lines, all the transit lines serving the station, and links to nearby transit stations.

California Company Settles FTC Charges Of Exposing Consumers’ Medical Transcripts Online

Personal information doesn’t get much more personal than your medical history. Ensuring your medical records are secure remains a top priorty for the Federal Trade Commission as they settled their 50th data security case on Friday.

The FTC announced that GMR Transcription Services, Inc. has agreed to settle charges that its inadequate data security measures resulted in thousands of consumers’ medical transcripts being indexed by a major search engine and available publicly online.

Affected transcripts were prepared by hired contractors between March 2011 and October 2011. Some of the files contained notes from medical examination of children and information concerning psychiatric disorders, alcohol use, drug abuse and pregnancy loss.

GMR’s privacy statements and policies promised consumers that their personal information would be highly secured. However, the company did not require individual contracts to implement security measures and in one case files were stored in readable text on a server accessible online.

As part of the settlement, GMR must establish a comprehensive information security system program to protect consumers’ personal information. The program must be evaluated initially and every two years by a third-party for the next 20 years.

The charges against GMR marks the FTC’s 50th data security case since beginning the data security enforcement program 12 years ago.

Google Building Its Own Driverless Cars

Following the news that Google spent $250M in investing in Uber this morning o that of Google making its own driverless cars aka "robo taxis".

Although Google had been working on software to help major automakers build self driving cars, it wont be wrong for it to build one of its own. Consequently, Google started designing and building its own full fledged self-driving cars. This means that Google I also in control of the entire manufacturing process.

The self driving car is rumoured to be a taxi that would pick up people from their abode or position rather than a car to be purchased by individuals due to high manufacturing cost of the prototype (around $150k). 

More on the matter would shed more light on the direction Google is going with the driverless car in the near future.
