Following a marathon and a half with Latitude

A few months ago, I started something crazy. Like a lot of Googlers, I work in Mountain View, CA but live in San Francisco, 37 miles away. When I moved to SF, I got hooked on the local cycling craze, and I fell in with a group that cycles to commute. Early on, biking to work was something audacious. Eventually, I decided that I wanted to do something that felt audacious again. So I decided to run to work to raise money for Teach for America.

Now 37 miles is a lot -- about a marathon and a half. Im thinking itll take me about 6 hours. For the past 4 months Ive been training, and now finally, tomorrow is the big day! Throughout the training, lots of people have said theyd love to see the run, but oddly, none of them were up for coming along. So, I decided to do the next best thing. Im going to take my Latitude-enabled phone with me, and let people follow along from home. Ive been blogging about my training and Ive embedded the Google public location badge on my blog for the big day. This badge lets me make my Latitude location public and share my progress on the run with anyone who views my blog, even if were not Latitude friends.

So, if youre up tomorrow, October 16, at 2:30 AM Pacific Daylight Time (or anytime over the next 6 hours or so), check out my progress and see if I make it into work on time. I could use the virtual encouragement!



Updated: I made it! 6 hours, 90 ounces of water, 3 energy gels and 1 banana later. Well, time to get back to work. Hope you all get our and run today!

Autocompletion of search suggestions is significantly faster in this latest version of the app, bringing you search predictions instantly with each letter you type. Youll also notice that results load faster, and checking out webpages is easy with the slide-in panel. Quickly swipe back and forth between webpages and your search results, and swap between search modes like Images and Places with a swipeable menu. Nokia announces PureView 808 with a 41 MP sensor

Today at their MWC2012s press event, Nokia brought the PureView teaser to fever pitch with the 41 megapixel camera of the Symbian Belle-running Nokia PureView 808.


The Nokia 808 PureView uses a 41 MP sensor, which captures image data from seven adjacent pixels and condenses it into one, resulting in stills at around 5 MP resolution with amazing detail and low noise levels. The optics are Carl Zeiss and theres Xenon flash and a LED one acting as a video light.
Technically, the sensor is able to capture 3 MP, 5 MP, 8 MP, 38 MP at 4:3 aspect ratio and 2 MP, 5 MP [Default], 8 MP, 34 MP at 16:9.
Video recording goes as high as FullHD 1080p at 30 fps and theres also 720p@30fps. Video is H264 encoded and supports stereo sound. The large image sensor allows 4x zoom in 1080p and 6x in 720p.

Nokia 808 PureView
The Nokia 808 PureView has a single-core 1.3 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM and runs Symbian Belle. The display is a 16:9 4" AMOLED unit of nHD (640 x 360) resolution covered with curved Gorilla Glass.
Theres NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, USB on the go and 16 GB of onboard storage.
The Nokia 808 PureView should be on the shelves around May 2012.

Jolla News Market share Q4 2013 and a view to the future of Jolla phone

Top Five Worldwide Smartphone Platforms, Shipments Q4/2012 & Q4/2013

AOSP (Android Open Source Project) with 25% at Q4/2013 has a huge gain compared to year back. These phones (forked Android) are mostly sold in China, India and other parts of Asian markets. A great deal of these phones have Android versions which are still using Google services, but back in October 2013 Google locked their Google Play service from forked Android phones (e.g. Kindle). Apps developed on Google API and dependent of Play services are not working in these phones any more.

Sailfish OS and Android support

Android support on Jolla is independent of Google Play services, but more and more apps developed on Google API are dependent on these. Due to this, Jolla owners might face a problem in close future - future Android apps developed on Google API will not run properly, and users are forced to hunt older, working versions of their desired apps. I might have encountered this already while updating Navfree - last working version seems to be 2.1.14

Its obvious that its not in Googles interest to enable their apps to run on any other platforms but unforked Android, and the 4% loss in their market share of native Android can already be heard as a sound of alarm for them. Its possible, even probable, that the support outside Googles Android is  getting even worse in a long run.

While all this we should be extremely happy and excited about each new native Sailfish OS app reaching Jolla Store. The phone is the cake, but its not much without great apps decorating it. On behalf of our community I want to show some respect for every single app developed:

Review Jollas thanks to Sailfish app developers

Starting soon, this blog will review as much Sailfish apps as possible. My first app review was IRC for Sailfish, but let that be just a beginning. As the amount of apps is growing, I also wish to welcome app reviews written by others to be shared here, please contribute for this common purpose and shere your respect with nice, yet honest, reviews.

Also, you will not find any more Android app reviews on this blog. Those already written (Go Launcher EX, Navfree, Plex, Flash player) may stay, as well as the App report tool where you can still share your experience from both Sailfish and Android apps (see Community DIT). In overall, this blog takes a turn towards Sailfish.

Conclusion

Sailfish OS will surely gain its independent market share in time, and while Google reduces their support outside native Android, Jolla has no idea to advance with its Android support in a long run. While the amount of native Sailfish apps is small, Android support remains as an important part of Jolla - especially in entering markets in Asia.

I wish that both Jolla and our great community will give their full support, in many different ways, to all Sailfish app developers - this has a first-rate importance.

LG Vu 3 packs a 4 3 aspect ratio Snapdragon 800 and LTE A in a boxy design

A quick search through our rather extensive database of rumors shows that LGs Vu 3 has generated disproportionately less hype than a device of its class and stature usually does. The internals, as rumored, turned out great for the most part. Those include the odd 5.2-inch 1280x960 (308 ppi) display which features a boxy aspect ratio of 4:3, Qualcomms latest and greatest Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU running at 450MHz. Along also comes 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear shooter with an LED flash, and a 2.1MP camera at the front. Moreover, the LG Vu 3 will come running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, and have access to the worlds fastest mobile networks, courtesy of its LTE-Advanced capabilities.

LG didnt stop there, though – a dedicated rubber rhodium stylus pen has also been thrown into the mix. Sadly, apart from providing the usual slew of functions like note-taking, converting the phablets screen into a notebook for writing and drawing, and the like, it doesnt appear as if LGs new phone will surprise in this particular department.

Proprietary gadgetry and general tech that weve come to recognize will also make an appearance in the Vu 3. These include LGs translucent QuickView case and software features like KnockOn (first seen on the LG G2) and the self-explanatory Guest Mode.

While pricing is currently unknown, LG Vu 3s release date has been set for September 27, for the South Korean market at least – worldwide availability appears unlikely. This is to be expected, considering the relatively miserable amounts of excitement the boxy Vu 3 has generated in the West.(PhoneArena)
