Nanotube Memory Capable of storing billion years data

nanotubeThe Department of Energys Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley researchers have developed an ultra-dense memory chip, capable of storing data for billion of years (besting silicon chips by roughly... a billion years). Consisting of a crystalline iron Nanoparticle shuttle covered within a multiwalled carbon Nanotube, the device can be write and read from using conventional voltages already available with digital electronics from today.

The research was lead by Alex Zettl, who observe that current digital storage methods are capable of storing mass amount of data. The new method, is based on the iron Nanoparticle which can move back and forth within the hollow Nanotu known as shuttle memory.Alex Zettl believes that, shuttle memory is years away from practical application, it could have a lot of archival applications in the future.

Sony Handycam DCR SR45

At only 14 ounces with battery and 3.1 inches high by 3 inches wide by 4.5 inches deep, the silver and black SR45 is compact and lightweight. Sony improved the body design over its predecessors, the DCR-SR42. The power, movie, still dial sits more in line with your thumb, while the dead center record button lets you start fast without much thought.

Above it are power and activity lights topped by a Quick On button that takes the camcorder quickly in and out of a standby mode.

On top sit the camera shutter button for taking stills and the rocker switch for the Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 40x zoom lens.

The switch operates smoothly as does the zoom, allowing for stutter free close ups.

However, since it lacks optical image stabilization, those extreme close ups will require a tripod.

At the front above the lens sits a stereo zoom microphone it attenuates with the lens to better capture the audio coming from the subject that performed much better than expected. Under the lens is a switch to open and close the built in lens cover. There are no mic or headphone jacks, which would be welcome, but manufacturers tend to jettison them for budget models.

What you will find under a sliding door on the right side is a mini USB port and an AV out designed for use with the included cable. Another sliding door on top hides a Memory Stick Pro Duo card slot it looks very similar to an accessory shoe cover, but those are rare in this price class while a flip down door below the main control dial hides the jack for the power cable. All the cover ups make for a clean appearance.

Also, hidden in plain sight off on the inside of the grip is the switch for the camcorders Nightshot Plus infrared light, which lets you capture creepy night vision video of people sleeping or whatever else you choose to shoot in complete darkness.

Lexmark C530dn

The Lexmark C530dn is a behemoth of a printer, as color lasers tend to be (individual toner cartridges take up a lot of space). The C530dns toner cartridges are stacked vertically, resulting in a tall unit 19 inches tall by 17 inches wide by 20 inches deep. It weighs a back breaking 57 pounds, but two hand wells on either side help you get a grip if you need to move the printer around. The control panel is very basic.

A four line text LCD is the centerpiece, though its not backlit, so it can be difficult to read in bad lighting conditions. Only eight buttons adorn the panel. Menu, four direction keys, a Check key, a Back key, and a Stop key. The C530dn comes with a 250 sheet input tray that can expand to hold legal size paper, as well as a 100 sheet multipurpose feeder that folds out from the front panel of the paper tray.

You dont get any paper expansion options on this model, but it should be sufficient for home users. If youre in a small office environment and need expanded paper handling.

The Lexmark C532n model offers the same 250 sheet tray plus an optional 550 sheet drawer, though you lose the multipurpose tray in favor of a single sheet manual feed slot (for an 800 page max input).

The next step up is the C532dn, which offers the 250 sheet tray, the 100 sheet multipurpose feeder, and the optional 550 sheet tray, for a total input capacity of 900 pages. The C530 series machines lack straight pass through printing, a potential problem if youre using paper that has a tendency to jam when curled. The Oki C5500n does include this feature. All three models in Lexmarks C530 come standard with a 375MHz processor and 128MB of RAM (The memory can be expanded up to 640MB).

The C530 series printers also come equipped with a USB connector and an Ethernet jack for network printing. You can opt for a Wi-Fi adapter, too, for wireless printing. Using the printers Menu option, you can change some settings including brightness, contrast, and saturation make collated prints or make a multipage print to fit multiple pages (up to 16) onto one sheet of paper.

Canon PowerShot G10

The G10 is physically quite similar to the G9. At 14 ounces, its heavier by about an ounce, and its also a bit bigger one to three tenths of an inch on all sides, for dimensions of 4.3 by 1.8 by 3.1 inches. As with its predecessors, the Canon G10s metal body feels like a tank. Im beginning to wish for just a little bit more grip, though, especially since the thumb rest feels kind of slippery. The dial configuration ranks as the most notable change to the design.

Canon stacked the mode dial inside the ISO dial for right hand operation and added an exposure compensation dial on the left. It retains the four way switch (for setting manual focus, macro, flash, and drive mode) with a Function or Set button nested inside the navigational scroll wheel on the back. And though the focus point, metering, display, and menu buttons remain in the same positions, they now have an odd, angled design.

Overall, I like the changes, and shooting with the G10 feels quick, fluid, and comfortable. The optical viewfinder is relatively large and distortion free, making it quite usable.

Though Canon giveth with the improved wide angle coverage, it taketh away in total zoom range. The new optically stabilized f/2.8-4.8 28-140mm equivalent 5x lens should please landscape photographers, but some folks will miss the 210mm equivalent reach of the G9.

That and the move to a 1/1.7 inch 14.7 megapixel CCD from a 12 megapixel version constitute the most notable feature changes. At least they havent taken away the stuff I liked in the G9 the built in neutral density filter, two slots on the mode dial for custom settings, ability to change the size of the AF area, a hot shoe, exposure lock, raw support, and the bayonet adapter mount that help distinguish the Canon G10 as a camera for enthusiasts.

The addition of Servo AF is nice as well, but its odd to use while holding the camera out for LCD view, and unlike on an SLR, theres no focus area confirmation in the G10s viewfinder. I think itll take some getting used to.

15 Reasons Why Do You Exercise

Dumble weights imageBeyond the health benefits to regular exercise, there are many other reasons why you should make fitness training a part of your daily routine. One of these reasons is because you can let go of the stress you have at work. Weblog The Next 45 Years writes:
Not everyone is born an athlete. Only a select few actually become professional athletes.

The rest of us pay their salaries. But in the gym, on the basketball court, we can let go and be the one who attempts the clutch shot or makes a key defensive stop. We are not passively watching, we are engaged and doing.

Exercise makes you feel good. Its also not a competition. A fitness routine can be paced according to your wants and needs and you can do as little or as much as you want. Besides living the healthy lifestyle, why have you chosen to exercise regularly? Come on you people, Share your reasons .

BlackBerry Bold 9000

RIM has dramatically improved the looks of its devices in recent years, and the Bold is a new high point. Its rounded corners and leather textured back make it somehow both professional and sexy. And the higher resolution screen is great, too. The Bold has a 320 by 480 pixel display, which is at least twice the resolution of the earlier RIM models, like the Curve.

This is a beautiful screen that makes everything you do with the Bold look great, but especially watching movies. This smart phone is wider than many of its competitors, but its also relatively thin. And its width allows the aforementioned screen to be larger, and also makes room for a bigger keyboard.

This isnt as wide as the landscape oriented keyboards youll find on some smart phones, but its large enough to be comfortable to type on. Theres no separation between keys, but each key has a raised area that makes it easier for you to be sure youre hitting just one at a time.

Sadly, the Bold doesnt fix one of my biggest complaints with BlackBerry keyboards there are no keys dedicated to the most frequently used punctuation marks, including the period and the comma.

Between the screen and keyboard is the trackball. As the Bold doesnt have a touchscreen, youll do much of your interacting with it through this, and its up to the job.

After a couple of days of use, I began to think that a trackball is a better option than a D-pad and definitely superior to the old BlackBerry track wheel. There are programmable keys on both the left and right sides of this device, which is another thing Id like to see on other smart phones. Theres also a button on top you can use to mute incoming calls.

This doesnt answer the call or send it to voice mail, it just quickly shuts off the ringing sound. You can use this same button to put the Bold in standby mode, which locks the keys and turns the screen off until you hit this button again. It will still take calls, so its a good way to carry your smart phone around.

Onkyo HT S7200 HT S6200 Home Theater Systems

Onkyo HT S7200 Home Theater System
Onkyo HT S6200 Home Theater System id=The Onkyo HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 feature five and four HDMI 1.3a inputs respectively and are completely compatible with 1080p HD video. The HT-S7200 also incorporates upscaling of component and composite video sources to 1080i including Faroudja DCDi Edge deinterlacing to eliminate unwanted conversion artifacts.

There is audio processing for every major surround format including decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless audio formats as well as Dolby’s new ProLogic IIz algorithm which introduces a third dimension to surround sound through the addition of a pair of height channels above the front left and right channel speakers. Onkyo’s HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 each include a full complement of 7 speakers with attractive gloss black finishes and a powerful subwoofer for deep bass reproduction. The HT-S7200 speaker system features dual-drive tallboy front speakers consisting of dual 3-1/4-inch woofers and 1-inch balanced dome tweeter – that deliver a fuller mid-range while making a sleek visual statement – a horizontal center channel with the same drivers and 4 surround speakers.

In addition to its inclusion with the HT-S7200 this speaker system is also available separately as the standalone model SKS-HT870 speaker package. The HT-S6200 incorporates gloss finished bookshelf sized speakers with single 4-inch woofers and 1-inch balanced dome tweeter on the three front speakers and 3-1/4-inch full range speakers for the surrounds. Both systems derive deep bass sound effects from a powerful, 230-watt bass reflex subwoofer with a 10-inch woofer. Both the Onkyo HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 include a trio of acoustic correction technologies. Audyssey 2EQ room correction and calibration system Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Audyssey Dynamic Volume. When used in combination with the 2EQ system the latter dynamically adjust the receiver’s output to correct for room acoustics, listening position, and playback-level variations, delivering an overall experience much closer match to what the audio engineers originally intended. The Onkyo HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 include Onkyo’s exclusive Universal Port (U-Port) which enables one-cable connection for the included UP-A1 iPod dock.

This control and charging dock integrates both audio and video playback from Apple iPhone or iPod portable devices, greatly extending the flexibility of these systems to integrate consumers’ electronic entertainment devices. Additionally the U-Port connection can also provide a one-cable connection to the company’s optional HD-Radio tuner making it simple to bring this new transmission format to the home theater.

HP Photosmart C5280

The HP Photosmart C5280 uses a body design similar to what weve seen with the Photosmart C5180. It stands 17.8 inches wide, 15.2 inches deep, and 8 inches tall, and weighs a mere 15.7 pounds. The 2.4 inch color LCD is top mounted on a panel that swivels through about 90 degrees, so you can easily see it whether youre sitting or standing. The on board buttons include task buttons, menu buttons for photos, scan, and copy, a red eye removal button, and start buttons.

Additionally, there are the usual menu navigation buttons, including a four way rocker, OK, and back. Four memory card slots are mounted on the front of the unit and take all the major card types, though some require adapters. Unfortunately, this model lacks a USB PictBridge port, so you cant print from a PictBridge enabled camera or a flash thumb drive, as you can with the Dell Photo 966.

Paper handling is simple the input and output trays are combined into a single cassette, with the output tray on top. The main input tray can hold up to 125 sheets of plain paper.

Additionally, a dedicated photo paper tray is mounted into the output tray and can hold up to 20 sheets of 4x6 photo paper.

One new feature on this printer is the ability to print directly onto the back of specially coated CDs and DVDs.

The disc feeding mechanism folds down sit to atop the output tray and a disc tray is hidden under the input tray.

The Photosmart C5280 uses a two tank ink system one black and one tricolor tank, though you can swap out the black for an optional tricolor photo tank for six color photo printing. Both black and regular tricolor tanks come in regular and XL (or high capacity) versions. The regular black costs $15 and prints roughly 200 pages, while the XL version costs $30 and is good for about 750 pages.

The regular color cartridge costs $18 for about 170 pages, and the XL version costs $35 for about 520 pages. Using the XL versions for best value, we calculate that black text costs about 4 cents per page and a full color print costs about 10.7 cents per page both numbers are low for an inexpensive inkjet printer. The monthly duty cycle is 3,000 prints.

Sony Handycam HDR SR7E

Along with its trio of siblings the tape based HDR-HC7, the flash based CX7, and the DVD based UX7 the SR7 uses Sonys 1/2.9 inch, 3.2 megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensor, recording video at 2.3 megapixel (HD) or 1.7 megapixel (SD) resolution before down sampling and encoding to 1080i HD (1,440x1,080) or SD (720x480), respectively.

It also shoots photos at native 2.3 megapixel (16:9) or 3 megapixel (4:3) resolutions, despite the grandiose 6 megapixel claim on the body, which refers to a maximum interpolated resolution. It sports a 10x zoom Zeiss T*-coated lens and 5.1 Dolby surround sound recording. If all you plan to do is play the video back on an HDTV, the SR7 is a great fit. For editing, though, there are still some hurdles to jump.

Most important, the AVCHD format used by Sony, Panasonic, and Canon for file based HD recording faces some glitchy to nonexistent software support.

In Sonys case, it really should drop the feeble Picture Motion Browser software bundle and include the more functional Vegas Video Movie Studio Platinum Edition, at least for the folks who drop over $1,000 on the HD Handycams.

Other cutting edge pitfalls include a mini HDMI connector (Type C), which requires a cable thats not yet ubiquitous and support for the mostly still unviewable x.v.Color (xvYCC) color space.

Thats all unfortunate, because the SR7 otherwise delivers a very good HD experience. From a design and operation perspective, it has everything we liked about the HC7. It weighs a bit less 1 pound, 5 ounces with battery but feels similarly comfortable to hold and shoot only using the touch screen requires an awkward two handed balancing act. Though inconvenient for menu navigation, the LCD otherwise works well and remains visible in harsh lighting.

I generally prefer shooting with an eye level viewfinder, though, and wish Sony had padded the hard plastic eyecup. Like most of Sonys consumer models, the SR7 incorporates the love it or hate it touch screen interface I fall more into the hate it camp, especially on the SR7s smaller 16:9 2.7 inch LCD. Within the menus youll find eight scene modes 24 step exposure shift manual, indoor, outdoor, and auto white balance and manual shutter speed adjustment between 1/2 and 1/500 second.

Spot Focus and Spot Meter take advantage of the interface by letting you literally point at your subject. You can assign one shooting adjustment setting manual focus, exposure compensation or exposure shift, white balance shift (toward red or blue), and shutter speed to control via the rather slippery CAM CTL dial.

For shooting convenience, Sony provides its excellent SuperSteadyShot optical image stabilizer and Active Interface Shoe, plus Super NightShot infrared mode for when you need to record in the dark. Other niceties include a built in electronic lens cover and a flash for still photos.

Creepy baby robot Researchers working to teach talk

Creepy icub baby robotThe iCub robot was already doing pretty well for itself in the creepiness department, but a group of researchers from the University of Plymouth are now working to take things one big step further, by teaching the so-called "baby robot" to talk (as opposed to teaching it baby talk).

That will supposedly be done over the next four years, during which time the researchers will work with language development specialists who normally study how parents teach children to speak. Eventually, they hope that the robot will be able to perform basic tasks like stacking wooden blocks, and be able name objects and actions so that it can speak basic phrases like "robot puts stick on cube" or "I want more life, father." Whats more, while the research hasnt even begun yet, one of the professors involved sees it as nothing short of a milestone, saying that "the outcome of the research will define the scientific and technological requirements for the design of humanoid robots able to develop complex behavioural, thinking and communication skills through individual and social learning.

Sony Cyber shot DSC T700

The T700 replaces the DSC-T300 in Sonys lineup. Like that camera, the T700 has a 10 megapixel, 1/2.3 inch Super HAD CCD sensor, wide 3.5 inch touch screen display, f3.5-f10 35-140mm equivalent Carl Zeiss lens (though the zoom range drops from 5x to 4x), Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization, and shooting features like Smile Shutter, face detection with child and adult priority control, and iSCN Intelligent Scene Recognition.

However, along with improvements made to the LCDs picture quality (921,000 pixels up from 230,000) the T700s internal memory jumps from 15MB to 4GB 3.7GB available for photo storage as well as support for up to a 16GB Memory Stick DUO PRO card. The internal storage combined with the 3.5 inch touch screen LCD and the bundled Sony Picture Motion Browser software is what turns the camera into a digital photo album.

Measuring a little more than 0.6 inch and weighing 5.6 ounces, the T700 is ultra slim and light. We tested a brushed silver version, but its available in gray, red, pink, and gold, too.

The camera has an elegant feel with a full metal body up front and sides, and nothing but screen on the back. In fact, the only physical controls are the power and shutter buttons on top and the well positioned zoom rocker at the right corner.

The only other button is a small Playback mode button at the top right of the display. On the bottom is the battery Memory Stick compartment, a proprietary connector for use with the included USB or AV cable, and a tripod mount. To take a picture you simply slide down the flat, metal lens cover and click away. Youll want to be careful of errant fingers getting in shots and touching the lens, however, as the lens is positioned at the far left.

Sonys high contrast Xtra Fine display is quite good. At its Normal brightness setting, I had no problem seeing the screen in direct sunlight. Well, no problem after wiping away fingerprints the T700 seems to collect more than most. If having to wipe off fingerprints is a deal breaker, youll want to skip this camera and probably all touch screen models for that matter of which there are more and more.

Aside from fingerprints, you might take issue with the touch screens responsiveness. I found the T700s to be fine with fingers, but better with the included stylus (or "Paint Pen" as Sony calls it) likely because I could be more precise with it. It clips onto the wrist strap and allows you to quickly poke around the three on screen menus (Home, Menu, and Display) along with the in camera retouching and painting tools (you can add stamps, frames, or draw on pictures) all while keeping the screen free of fingerprints.

Navigating the camera settings is easy enough. The Home menu gives you access to all the main features and options, while the Menu screen provides context sensitive options; for instance, if youre taking still pictures, you get all the shooting choices like scene modes and resolutions. The DSC-T700 offers 10 scene modes including a new Gourmet option for shooting food as well as the typical auto features.

Nokia E90 Communicator

The Nokia E90 Communicator is a mammoth. The handset measures a whopping 5.2 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide by 0.7 inch deep and weighs 7.4 ounces, so you can pretty much forget about slipping this into a pants pocket, comfortably anyway. On the upside, the smart phone has a solid construction and looks like it could weather some rough treatment. Its also got a decidedly no nonsense, corporate look, which suits its intended audience of power business users.

Like its feature set, the Nokia E90 Communicators design is quite large. The exterior of the E90 features a 2 inch diagonal, 16 million color display with a 320x240 pixel resolution. Its not a touch screen, but text and images are vibrant and sharp. Below the screen, youll find a standard navigation array of two soft keys, Talk and End buttons, a shortcut to the Main Menu, a four way toggle with center select key, and the alphanumeric dial pad.

This is one area where the phones bigger size is an advantage since the extra room allows for large buttons that are easy to press.

The extra room does allow for a roomy alphanumeric dial pad and navigation array. Aside from roomy controls, theres another benefit to Nokia E90s bulkiness.

The candy bar style phone opens up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and a 3.6 inch wide internal display.

The latter has a 16 million color output and 800x352 pixel resolution that makes for an impressive view. The wide screen also lends itself really well for browsing Web sites and reading documents and emails. Also, flanking the screen is another set of Talk and End buttons and two soft keys. Opening the candy bar style smart phone reveals a 3.6 inch internal display and full QWERTY keyboard.

The keyboard shouldnt give users too many problems as far as typing with ease and accuracy. The individual buttons are roomy, so its not an issue that there isnt much spacing between them. They also have a tactile feel to them our only complaint would be that theyre a bit stiff to press.

In addition, theres a dedicated number row, and right below the display, you will find shortcuts to various applications, including Contacts, Messaging, Web, and Calendar. On the right spine, theres a voice recorder button and a camera activation key, while the bottom of the device has a mini USB port, a power connector, and a 2.5 millimeter headset jack. On the back you will find the 3.2 megapixel camera and flash, and a microSD expansion slot.

App Engine Community Update

Having spent the past two weeks tracking a hamster across America, creating collaborative pictures, and planning plenty of parties, I think its time to get together another community update.

We were excited to find that one of our developers has started tracking App Engine performance, and hope to see more along these lines in the future. Developers continue to contribute information relating to the bulk loader, including an article that discusses UTF-8 and HandleEntity. And finally, Adobe AIR and Flex developers might be interested in this article about creating a photo application on Google App Engine.

Those of you who arent content to just read may wish to get your hands dirty with some Open Source App Engine code. Weve had 10 more additions to our Open Source project page, including projects that will interest all you Scrabble players, radio listeners, and RESTful developers.

Lastly, the forum discussion continues to keep pace, with topics that include IP geocoding, domain configuration, and continued discussion about the cap on indexed properties for an entity.

Keep letting us know what youve been up to!

Instant Access to Websites with your iPhone and iPad

The iPhones Safari browser is nice and quick. What isnt quick is typing in a web address-- it takes longer to tap-tap-tap http://christianboyce.blogspot.com into Safari than it does to read the articles when you get there. There are ways to make getting to websites in Safari quicker; here are two of the best. The second ones better than the first but read the whole thing anyway.

First, use the bookmarks. The icon looks like an open book, at the bottom of the Safari app (circled in red below). Tap that button and youre on your way. Of course, you have to get bookmarks into your iPhone. The easy way: set them up in Safari on your Mac, check the box in iTunes to synchronize bookmarks, and sync. Or add them via the Share button on your iPhone (keep reading).

Having bookmarks makes using Safari on your iPhone a lot easier-- just tap Safari, tap the Bookmarks button, scroll around through the folders and eventually you find what youre looking for and then you tap that. Whew. Not easy enough.

Heres the right way: add icons for your favorite websites to your Home screen so you can load them in one tap. Actually, make that "Home screens." As long as there is room for another icon on one of your Home screens this tip works. When theres no more room, you cant use this tip.

So how do we do it? Easily, thats how:

1. Go to the web page that you want to make an icon for.
2. Tap the "Share" button (just to the left of the bookmarks button). Youll get this screen:

You want "Add to Home Screen." Choose that, and you get this:

Like they say-- "An icon will be added to your home screen so you can quickly access this web site." Adjust the name as desired (more on that later) and tap the blue "Add" button. Thats it. Heres how your Home screen might look after adding this site:

One tap on that red-circled icon and you go straight to the web page. Pretty neat, but not actually pretty. Theres room for improvement. Two tricks: first, before adding the icon to the Home screen, stretch the web page until youre looking at exactly what you want the icon to look like. Heres an example, using http://christianboyce.blogspot.com:

I know this guy.

NOW when you hit that "Share" button your icon will look pretty good, depending of course on whos looking. Mom likes this one.

The second thing to do is to keep the name short. As we saw above, "The Boyce Blog" turned into "The Bo... Blog"-- sounds a little stinky. Shorten up the name and youll end up with something that fits, as seen below.

Next time you want to go to the Boyce Blog, poke that icon in the nose and the page will come right up.

(Bonus: to get rid of an icon just touch it and hold it until it wiggles. Then tap the circled X in the top left corner of the icon. Double-bonus: this whole thing works for iPads too.)
